Planning - Images

I took many images of Wyke College, the college that I am creating a magazine for. For my front cover image I am using  a mid-shot of a girl representing the college. I have took the images against one of the bulidings, with yellow and red tiles, as I wanted the image to have some colour instead of just been plain. This will help me decide on my colour scheme. I have left enough room at both sides of the image and above to make sure that I have enough space on the image to add all my magazine conventions, most importantly the Masthead. My model is holding a folder to represent education, she is also smiling to represent her positiviely towards the students.

This is the image I've decided to use for my front cover. Has it has the right amount of space above to include my masthead and plently of room at the side for my information.

I am also going to include photos on my Contents Page, these are going to be photos of the college.

Planning - Fonts

Fonts
Testing out fonts I could use for my Masthead on my College Magazine Cover.
The color I am going to use for my font is going to be purple as it's the theme colour for Wykes logo and I want to incorporate that in my magazine so students will be familar with the colour. My masthead is the biggest object on my magazine apart from the image so it needed to stand out and be bold. I have chosen enboldened fonts instead of italics for my main title to make it stand out above the rest of the titles. Also because it's a college magazine the fonts are quite basic to make it look formal but still have that bold element to it.

I have chosen this font to feature in my college magazine as the masthead. The font is Rockwell condensed.

Digital Mock Up

Front cover

This is my Digital Mock Up for my magazine. I created it on publisher and decided where I was going to include all my magazine conventions. When I create my drafts I will add more conventions and experiment to see what looks best where. I want my magazine to have as many conventions as possible to attract students to buy it but I didn't want it to be too over crowded so it over-lapps my focal image.

Contents page
For my contents page I am going to have a similar masthead to my front cover. I am going to put Wyke's logo at the top and underneath an introducation to the magazine that will be in every magazine and a signiture underneath from who it's written by. All my features are going to be placed at the right hand side of the magazine. All my features are going to be placed underneath subtitles to tell the students what them features are about. The features are going to have page numbers at the side so they can pick and choose what they want to look at. My images are going to be placed at the bottom left of the page to make the page look tidy.

Paper Draft

Price & published

Price is very important feature on the magazine, because if it's too expensive people will tend not to buy it. Sometimes magazines feature special offers on the price of magazine so audiences will buy their magazine then the ones in competition with it. For my college magazine I am going to make the price around £0.80 this is because my target audience are students and they are not full-time employed. The magazine needs to be affordable to them, in order for them to want to purchase it.

I have chosen my magazine to be published every fortnight, if it was published weekly it would have little information in and if it was published monthly it would have too much information to include. As it would have notices in and events all the students would be up to date with the college every fortnight the magazine is published.

Preliminary Task

In my Preliminary Task I am going to create a college magazine. I am going to choose to create a cover for Wyke College as I attend this college and will have much more useful resources. I will be able to take my own photographs of how I want the college to look and add real-life subjects to the magazine, this will make it easier then making it up myself. As the college is a sixth form it is smaller which will make the magazine much more personal and direct. All the students are similar ages ranging from 16 to 19 so my target audience is going much more easier to target because it's for young people.

GoAnimate.com: Target Audience by EmilyMcdougallxx

From my research on target audience I am going to make my college magazine appeal to both male and female, as both attend my chosen college and it will be a wider audience. The age range will have to be from 15 to 24 as you don't start college until your at least 16. My S.E.G for my chosen audience will vary around E and D as they are students. They could be classed also under D as they could be employed outside of college.

The Brief - Analysis

Liar analysis of the College Magazine Brief

Language
The language of a college magazine includes everything I have covered in my key conventions of a magazine. These conventions are very important as they all have equal importance of what makes up a magazine.

Institution
Most college's have their own magazine, not only does this promote education. It can be made by the students themselves which makes the magazine come from the perpiective of a student and other students will be more eager to read it.

Ideogly
The ideogly of the magazine would to encourage education to the students and also a great social life. This will be balanced information to enable students to enjoy student life but also get good grades. If the students themselves created the magazine other students would feel more encouraged to work harder as well and it would set a positive example.

Audience
The audience for a college magazine is basically the people who attend the college, as it would include stories and information for students. The magazine would not promote the college. It wouldn't be a large audience as the magazine would stay within the college.

Represented
The college magazine would represtent the college but also students, as students are sterotypically seen as negative in the Media. The college magazine should premote positivity to show that all students are not sterotypically all the same. The magazine would represent students in a positive way to encourage other students to follow that trend, socially and in their education.

Annotated Magazine's

Language
The colour scheme is important as it sets the style of the magazine, the colour scheme of this magazine itself is yellowy-green this stands out against the black and grey gradient background which looks sophisticated to give the college theme to the magazine. The colour green is used for the subtitles, to highlight them and summarise what the smaller features below is about, the colour green symbolizes nature and life which could represent college life. The Masthead Title Piece is placed at the top but spread out so it's not directly in the top left so if other magazines are overlapping it, you could still recognise it. Underneath is a subtitle which is part of the title as its not as important. There is a adverts blurb or a graphic this could be a banner-style shape however in this case it's in a paint shape and its also emphasised by including the word "splat" this draws the readers eye straight to it from the explosion of colour. The writing in the middle is not only to match up with the rest of the type but to contrast against the hot pink background. The price is at the bottom left of the magazine underneath the bar code this is so you can easily find the price, as the barcode stands out. The font is written in mostly Ariel to make the magazine sophisticated, and suitable for college. However the subtitles emboldened and is in a different colour to highlight them and the smaller features are just written in the same font but in a smaller font and the colour white to look plain. The subtitles are arranged in a colour coded fashion, and include four words to summarise the information below and attract the audience to the main features of the magazine.

Institution
The makers of the magazine will control the product, the makers is most probably a selection of studets themselves. This will effect the final product as students will know what is going to interest them to buy the product as they are very similar.

Ideology
The ideology of the magazine is represent the college as being smart and sensible. It's also to encourage education to students and a healthy social balance between social life and college work. Reading the college magazine weekly/ monthly should put students on the right track of mind to do well in their studies. Not only does the magazine promote education but it also promotes events too, this way students will feel happier if they have a great social life, to learn and do well at college.

Audience
The audience is for uni-sex students in that college. As it's a boy that's represented, boys will look up to him and girls will like him. The smart colours show that its for both audiences as it's not a gender dominated colour or example blue or pink. It includes events and advise which all college students would be interested in.

Representation
The college magazine "College" is represented by a possible student who attends the college. They have represented him in a positive way because he looks smart, but also cool. He is also holding books in one hand this is to encourage education to the students. He is wearing a black leather jacket to make the magazine look smart, but also a cool edge.
.

LanguageThe masthead on this college magazine is placed across the top of the page. The font is very basic but sporty and is in a red shade to compliment the red of the t-shirt the girl is wearing. For there housestyle they have used black, blue and red, these are primary colours. They have placed the barcode at the bottom right of the magazine, possibily so it's easily to see.The date and issue number is directly underneath the masthead so it is visable and students can see what date it was released and such.

Instiution
This magazine has also possibly been created by students, as college magazines usually are. This will also mean the final product will be more effective as students themselves will know what to include in the magazine to make it relevent to the students lifestyle and education.

Ideology
The idea of the magazine is to promote education to students. This college magazine is spefic to sports as the girl is wearing a "sporty" outfit. This could also mean the magazine is there to educate and promote not only sports, but a healthy and fit lifestyle whilst they attend college. This would benefit the students as it might make them more motivated with their studies.

Audience
The audience for this magazine would be the students who attend the college and possibily some of the teachers who attend also who would maybe be interested in the events.

Represention
The represention of the girl is in a positive outlook. She is representing the sports in the college, and being healthy and fit. She is smiling on the image which might motivate students to want to keep healthy and fit also.

Contents Page

Language
At the top of a contents page it will usually have a similar masthead title like the front cover however it will say "contents" instead of the title of the magazine. This magazine contents page has a masthead title saying "contents" in green brick writing. Green is a vibrant colour, this could suggest the liveliness of the college and what it brings to its students. Sometimes the contents title will display the date and issue number however because this is for a college magazine it's more simple. Each features section on this contents page has a colour code red, blue, purple and yellow. This makes it easier to follow and understand whats in each category. For the titles they are in large clear font with a white shadow around to stand out against the features underneath which is in white plain font. There is page references against each feature to locate people whereabouts they are in the magazine.

Institution

Ideology

Audience
The audience for this magazine will be college student, has it has images of students on the contents page.
