Film essay black swan

The Black Swan
The Black Swan, 2010 has won 1 Oscar award of "Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role" by Natalie Portman. The film is all about a  ballet dancer Nina played my Natalie who wins the lead in "Swan Lake" as the "Swan Queen" and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan -
Princess Odette - but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odile, the Black Swan.

The main character Nina who is played by Natalie Portman is a fragile, broken character who seems very unstable. Her mother is an obbsessive, over-protective former dancer who controls everything in Nina's life including her dancing and puts lots of pressure on her to do well. At times the relationship between mother and daughter can be quite over bearing as there is suggestive scenes were Nina may be being sexual abused by her mother as they hold a very close, difficult relationship. Nevertheless, it was interesting to watch.
Nina is only in her twenties however, she's still treat like a child by her mother, her room connototes
her childish character as it's pink and has stuffed animals like it belongs to a little girl, this was obviously Nina's room when she was younger which shows that her mother doesn't like change and still wants to protect Nina. Along with Nina's illness comes a scratching disorder and ends up leaving a scar on her back and her mother is forever more cutting her nails so Nina cannot do it anymore.

The film throughout shows close up camera movements, particularly on Nina's face to show emotion. There is a scene in the movie where Nina is taken out by her rival Lily (Mila Kunis) and it is made obvious to the audience that Lily has spiked Nina's drink as we see a completely
different side to Nina as she looses all control of herself and is no longer an innocent, shy girl. This is also exaggerated by camera flashes in the club, along with a red light so we can barely see what is going on, we see it from Nina's point of view. The camera also makes very fast, sudden camera movements this is really clever however quite confusing at times, as it's not like the slow natural flow of life.

Nina who has been chosen to play the Queen Swan has a nervous breakdown throughout the film, were we see Nina's halluctions of her doing damage to her body and us as the audience also lose grip on reality. These scenes can be quite disturbing and gory making the horror genre aspect of the film come to life. Nina carries on with the show as, as she says at the end she wants to be perfect, like the other Queen Swans and doesn't want to be replaced by her rivel Lily (Mila Kunis) who suits the Black Swan role.

The movie is very intoxicating and the audience becomes to feel for Nina and her struggle to want to be the best, whilst trying to overcome her mental illness and pretend she's okay. I can also gather from the film that Nina has an eating disorder as many times in the film she is making herself throw up, I didn't like scenes like this in the movie as it was uncomfortable to watch.

However, there is lots of strengths about the film as it's very unqiue. They have managed to put a twist on Ballerine dancing which is usually seen as light, fairy-like and beautiful but in this it's dark, twisted and a little scary at times. The film is breath taking at times and completely captures you in the thoughts of Nina.

In the end Nina ends up killing herself at the end of the play, she says at the very end "I was perfect"
and then the screen turns white connotating that she's dying.
