A Music Genre is a category and type of music that can be distinguished from other types of music. Music is divided into many different genres. Music Genre depends on opinion, as all different people like all different genres. A genre is split into three different groups, then they are split further into sub genres.

Art Music
Art music is usually classical music as well as historical. The music is usually formal however it can include certain forms of jazz (although jazz is a primarily form of popular music). Art music is usually only instrumental and if and when vocals are include they explicit poetic, political, or religious meanings.

Popular Music
Popular music belonging to any of the musical styles that are promoted to the general public by one or more of the mass media. Unlike art music, popular music is distributed to a large group of listeners. Popular music benefits the market economy as it makes a profit, most commercial  music retailers will put their music on radio stations or on television advertisements.

Traditional Music
Traditional music or what used to be known as "Folk Music" is passed down usually through singing, listening and sometimes dancing. The music is part of a certain region or culture.

Heres a spider diagram of different types of music genre. There is many types of genres, some are more popular then others as some genres fit into "Popular Music".

Here is an example of a rock magazine "Kerrang". Without knowing this was a rock magazine, you could spot the ideology on the cover. Firstly, the lead singer of "Green Day" is the main image. It also includes in big bold lettering "GREEN DAY". This is to attract an audience that might like "Green Day" so they will buy the magazine. It's also writen in the same font as "Kerrang" is written, this implys that they are both the same thing, they are both rock genre for example. You know it's a music magazine as the lead singer is holding a guitar. Guitars are usually assoicated with rock genre. Some of the text above the "GREEN DAY" has been writen in green.
